Ambience

If you are looking for a change of scene from the city skyline, then Vapiano is the place for you. Vapiano offers a relaxing atmosphere filled with warm lighting, natural furniture, and decor which features olive tree and herb pots placed on each table.

We visited Vapiano just after lunch time (2 pm) to avoid peak hour after running a quick search to find that it can get busy and you may find yourself waiting for at least 15-20 minutes waiting in the queue to order your food!

Service

The service style is unique, efficient and fun. The ordering system is based on a card charging system where everything you order is accumulated and the final bill is calculated using the card.

There are multiple stations offering specific categories of food such as pizza, pasta, and dessert. Once the order is made, you are able to view the chef creating your order through an open kitchen in the station.

As for table waiting, this is not something you should expect from Vapiano. From my experience, it appears that majority of the service is self-serve similar to a bar style where utensils and additional seasonings are available at each station. You will see waitresses working, however, it appears their main job is to clear tables and housekeeping. I am sure if we required some assistance, we would be able to ask the waitress for service, but due to the efficiency of Vapiano, we did not see the need for extra assistance.

Food

Presentation

Being able to see your food made fresh, this definitely is a bonus to the overall experience. The pasta bowls and pizza plates were all white which also provides a great contrast to the environment and highlights the food.

There is definitely no lack of color or ingredients on each plate provided by the herbs and fresh ingredients used.

Taste

Fungi Pizza was stunning with the crust perfectly formed and not burnt or undercooked. You could feel the crunchy toasted outside and skirt of the pizza, however, the inside was still soft. The mozzarella was melted nicely and blended extremely well with the homemade tomato paste and fresh mushrooms. I did find the mushrooms were not spread evenly and could find some slices with more mushroom than others.

I would say that the pasta is what this place would be better known for. Gamberi E Spinaci with tortellini was the order and definitely was the right decision. Freshly chopped tomato, onions, and spinach with basil pesto created a garden like scenery planted on a base of tortellini pasta. Parmesan was generously added on top to give even more texture and taste. Definitely better than your average everyday pizza.

Last but not least the dessert! I was presented with a dilemma with the choice of the tiramisu or panna cotta which is my go to choice. After reconsidering the options, I could not make up my mind and decided to take both. I would say that the panna cotta was not the best I have had, but the tiramisu was definitely delightful. It was thick and creamy and the bitter note of the espresso and cocoa balanced out by the soft sponge fingers sweetness.

Overall, the taste was well balanced and there were no ingredients which were overpowering. Everything was freshly made and was not too greasy. You would definitely not have a guilty feeling after eating here.

Value

As Sydney is an expensive place to live in, anything within the range of $18 – $20 AUD is the norm for lunch, especially in the heart of CBD.

Looking at the menu, overall it is reasonably priced and the portion given is quite generous. You will definitely not be hungry after eating your meal. The dessert itself is also priced well enough that it will entice you to be naughty once in a while and treat yourself to some sweets!

Would I come back to this place again? Certainly! The idea of self-service and seeing the food made right before your eyes are definitely interesting and something different from your usual spots.

Whether it be a corporate lunch or a fun date night, the variety of food choice and natural ambience makes Vapiano a good option against other places in the city.
