Black Star Pastry

- Order: Strawberry Watermelon Cake Slice
- Final bill: $8.00 AUD
Situated inside a busy bookstore, Kinokuniya, in the Galleries Town Hall, Black Star is a favorite for those who love their pastries. The location itself is quiet noisy with chatter from people walking by and those sitting in inside the cafe itself. Right next door you have another popular noodle house, Ichi-Ban Boshi, which adds onto the noise level of the area. Though, this is not always a bad thing.
If you are looking for a quiet spot to read your book, you are better off going further into the bookstore or find somewhere else. However, if you are looking for a nice bubbly spot to just chill and hang out with friends, then this is not a bad idea.
Unfortunately, I only did takeaway this time around, so it would be unfair for me to comment on their in-house service. However, from the service provided at the counter to get my order, there is nothing bad or out of the ordinary. The staffs were very bubbly and happy to answer your questions and offer suggestions.
As you wait in line, looking at the display, immediately you start salivating and thinking of how delicious the strawberry watermelon cakes are. The cakes were consistent and had very evenly spread layering. The watermelon and strawberry brought a vibrant and summer-like feeling with the flowers adding extra visual effect to the already amazing looking cake.
The packaging is nothing but the feeling of a premium product. The takeaway bag was a strong thick brown paper which you could definitely reuse. It was simple but yet very elegant, however somewhat unnecessary for a small piece of cake. The box encasing the cake itself was on another level. It was designed with a nice sky blue colour with a simple logo and image on the front, though I am not sure of the connection between the fish and Black Star as a brand itself. If anyone does please let me know!
As you can see below from the unboxing, it is definitely an experience, however, I was a bit disappointed to see that my cake was able to move freely and almost fell apart during my transit. It would be great if Black Star Pastry could do something about this to ensure that the cake does not get mutilated during transportation.
It was my first time experiencing a watermelon cake and really had no idea what to expect. I have heard many good things about this cake and had some high expectation, however, what was delivered really blew me out of the waters!
As you eat the cake, you feel a sense of smooth creamy texture throughout and then the sweet crunch of the watermelon, along with the rose-scent throughout each bite. It really does remind you of a nice picnic in a garden and as you eat some watermelon, you can’t help but be lifted by the fragrant of roses surrounding you. It is hard to explain the number of thoughts which went through my mind as I was eating this, but all I knew was a deeply satisfied feeling and the yearning for more.
Usually, I am not a big fan of rose petals or any sort of flowery garnish, but it really helped heightened the overall visual and flavour of the cake.
Initially, I thought to myself, $8 is pretty expensive considering you are only getting a slice of cake. There was a form of regret as I held the bag going back to the office. However, after experiencing and tasting the cake itself, that feeling of regret was washed away.
To taste and understand the complexity of this case, really makes you appreciate the difficulty and effort which was put into making such a delicious piece of art.
I would strongly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a unique and tasty treat. It definitely would be a great way to finish your dinner, or even just to spruce up your lunch. This cake would be amazing as a birthday cake for those special milestones such as sweet 16, 18 or 21, or perhaps even a baby shower. It would definitely leave your guests satisfied with a long lasting impression on your party!
